How to Stay Focused (Life-changing)
Published: Fri, 10/14/11
Hi ,
I received a great question via email recently: "How do I stay focused for the long haul? I get plugged in, but in a week or two I lose it again and put back on everything I lose. I know renewal of the mind is the key but I can't seem to hold that focus."
Can you relate to this question? I know I can.
Many of you know I got married last year. I love marriage, but I discovered that merging two lives into one ain't easy!
For me, the challenge showed up most in my health routine. My exercise program became spotty at best and my eating habits took a turn for the worst.
The results? Clothes that used to fit me no longer did and I was unhappy with the change.
But now, I am in a health revival and am nearly back into my normal size. I feel great!
How did I regain my focus?
I started practicing wisdom I learned about in bible study. In one session, the pastor gave this scripture from Ephesians 5:15-16:
"See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil."
He asked us to consider these questions:
- How do you spend your time? What things consume most of it?
- What is the #1 thing that adds the most value to your life?
- What is the 2nd thing that adds the most value to your life?
- What is the 3rd thing that adds the most value to your life?
He said that 90% of your time should be spent on your top three priorities. When I did the exercise, I discovered my priorities are:
- My relationship with God.
- My relationship with my husband/family.
- My health.
The problem was, my daily actions weren't reflecting those priorities. For example, work was not even in my top three, but it was occupying most of my time.
So I made adjustments to my daily life. I started back exercising six days a week and made it a priority to keep healthy food available at home.
I started back having my quiet time with God first thing in the morning. I read the bible and then I sing and pray with Mike when he wakes up.
Mike and I also started having a "date" once a week. We have a lot of fun!
Now, I make sure I spend time on my top three things every day without fail. It gives me a sense of purpose and accomplishment to know that I am keeping "first things first".
Is health on your list of priorities? If so, where does it fall? If you are losing focus, try elevating health and make sure everyday, you act according to that priority.
Your focus will return and you'll feel good about yourself and your life.
And your body will start changing for the better, day by day.
Be blessed in health, healing, and wholeness,
