A New You? How to Reboot

Published: Fri, 01/07/11

Dear ,

I read that the average couple gains 15 pounds when they marry. Well, I got married 7 weeks ago and was shocked to discover that I was headed in that same direction!

So what did I do? I started back doing what I know about health and weight loss. During the New Years eve service we attended, the pastor gave a great example of when a computer has problems, you often have to reboot by pressing the "CTRL-ALT-DELETE" keys together.

I'm using that same principle to reboot my health efforts and I hope this helps you too.

Control: I'm reminding myself that I am in control of the health choices I make everyday. I can't blame anyone else for my choices. In the first weeks of my marriage, I starting buying more unhealthy foods in a misguided effort to demonstrate love to my husband with food. In addition, I was using my change in marital status as an excuse to indulge myself in my favorite temptation - sweets.

But Romans 13:14 reminds us: "...put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts."

This scripture convicted me of the fact that I was making provisions to fulfill my sugar addiction - big time! Once I recognized my error, I went to Mike and we discussed the issue. Since he wants to drop a few pounds too, we decided on what "treats" we would buy every once in a while but we agreed that we wanted our baseline meals and snacks to be healthy ones so we could live fit, energetic lives according to God's purpose.

Alternate: My alternate was to go back to eating fruit to satisfy my sweet tooth instead of danishes and cake. In addition, Mike and I decided to walk in the evenings instead of watching television during that time. We also altered our morning routine so that I can resume my normal morning exercise program. Yes, I stopped exercising regularly too after the wedding!

Delete: I had to 'delete' big portion sizes. I was giving Mike large portions with our meals and gave myself large portions to match his. I had to return to the normal portion size so I can maintain my normal clothing size.

This experience is a great reminder to me that admitting you have weaknesses and failures is not a weakness. It is strength. When you admit them, then you can do something about them.

It would have been easy for me to comfort myself with excuses when I discovered my weight gain. But I started this journey 7 years ago and I know that excuses only make you feel good about staying where you are. If you want to move forward, then you need to get up and move. Simple huh?

Ask yourself: What can I do today that will put me one step closer to the body/health that I want to have? That's the key to your reboot.

Whatever that one step is - do it now. Then tomorrow, take another step.

You only need to focus on action one day at a time. Plan for tomorrow but act Today.

That's what I am doing. How about you?

Be blessed in health, healing and wholeness
