Better Than You Can Imagine / One of 1,000,000
Published: Thu, 04/09/09
Hi ,
Are you using your imagination to propel yourself forward or to hold yourself back? I hope you'll consider this question carefully after you read this story.
I teach an online class on overcoming shyness called 'Goodbye to Shy' and one of my students wrote about being overcome with negative thoughts and depression. He said that he had even considered suicide at times.
He described his thought life as like an 800-pound gorilla, beating him up with nasty put-downs that told him that he was no good, he was ugly, and no matter what he tried he could not change.
In a flash, I saw the similarities in what he wrote to how I imagined myself as a shy teenager. Back then, I saw myself as a princess trapped in a stone tower, being terrorized by an evil dragon. No matter how I much I tried to escape the tower, the dragon was there. He had fearsome claws and he breathed fire.
My situation depressed me too. It was like I was surrounded by darkness and I could not see the way out. I too had suicidal thoughts back then.
But one day, I had a startling revelation.
It was true that I was the princess. However, I was also the dragon.
I was the one keeping myself trapped by the lies I chose to believe about myself and my situation. I praise God today that He showed me the truth and delivered me!
According to Proverbs 23:7: "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he."
I believe that God gave you an imagination as a gift to help you strengthen your faith. If you use this gift wisely, you dream of a better future and encourage yourself moment by moment. You then feel stronger and move forward toward your future with confidence.
However, if you abuse your imagination by putting yourself down, or by entertaining fear, worry, and negativity then you too will have an 800-pound gorilla standing in the way of the hope and future God wants you to have.
Remember this: As a believer, you have the power of God through Jesus Christ living inside of you. Not only do you have the ability to take your thoughts captive to the obedience of Jesus Christ, but you have the responsibility to do it.
This responsibility is not just about you: It is about everyone that God has placed in your life for you to bless.
Today, resolve to use your imagination to strengthen your faith and encourage yourself. That way, you will position yourself to receive God's best as he gives you a future that is better than you can imagine!
"But as it is written: 'Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.'" - 1 Corinthians 2:9
