please beware of this ONE word
Published: Wed, 08/13/08
Dear ,
Normally when I send out emails, my goal is to encourage and uplift you. But today, I am compelled to warn you about something. One word.
I've been hearing this word a lot lately, and it always raises a red flag when I'm around someone who uses it a lot.
I want you to be aware of this word because I believe if you use it in the wrong context, you are programming yourself for failure.
A sermon I heard years ago told me about this word. The pastor was
talking about people who use the word "try". He said that when someone
tells you they are going to "try" to do something, they are really
telling you that they aren't going to do it.
I thought that
was harsh when I first heard it, but the more I thought about it, the
more I realized it was true. Think about it: If you invited someone to
dinner and they told you they are going to "try" to get there, how
confident are you that they are going to show up? Probably not
confident at all. And "try" has the same effect when you tell yourself
you are going to "try" to do something.
Do this exercise right now: Try to get up from your chair.
Now if you actually stood up, you didn't do the exercise correctly. I
didn't ask you to get up from the chair. I asked you to "try" to get up
from the chair.
It's a whole different experience. When you "try" to get up from the chair, you struggle to get up, but you ultimately fail.
Remember this the next time you say things like "I'm going to try to start exercising" or "I'm going to try to eat better." Also beware if the majority of the people you hang out with are "try-ers" and not "do-ers." If that is the case, then expand your circle to get under the positive influence of more "do-ers."
To quote Yoda, the Jedi Master from Star Wars: "Do...or do not. There is no try."
