Dealing With Enemies in Your Promised Land - Part 1

Published: Thu, 09/18/08

Hi ,

This past Sunday during my private prayer/bible study time, a disturbing question popped into my head: God gave the Promised Land to the Israelites as a blessing...so how come he left enemies in there for them to deal with?

According to human logic, God should have just kicked those enemies out so they wouldn't have to deal with any problems.

To relate, think about a dream of yours that was fulfilled...but brought with it a whole new set of problems for you to deal with!

I just had to find out the answer to this.

And here it is straight from the bible:

Exodus 23: 25-30

"Worship the LORD your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you, and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span.

I will send my terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run. I will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites out of your way. But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land."

So the first reason God left the enemies was because he was allowing the enemy's work to bless the Israelites before they arrived. He said that if he drove the enemy out in a single year, the land would become desolate, so God allowed the enemy to continue to chop down trees, clear land, plant fields, and build houses...in short, create an inhabitable land so that when the Israelites arrived, they would have  ready-made homesteads in which to live rather than having to start from scratch.

What enemies are you having to deal with? Have you ever thought about how God is using that enemy to bless you even right now?

Here are two steps you can use to take advantage of enemies in your Promised Land:

1. Continually seek God for wisdom on dealing with the enemy and obey when that wisdom is given to you.

2. Thank God for the trial as an opportunity to see his power of deliverance manifested in your life.

In your quest to reach your perfect weight, you will have enemies to deal with - enemies within, like decreasing motivation to enemies without, like food temptations.
