How to Do the Right Thing When You Don't Want To
Published: Wed, 09/10/08
Hi ,
Last week, a lady wrote me about her difficulty in sticking with her health goals and she gave me the impression that she thought I never struggle in this area. Nothing could be further from the truth!
It might surprise you to know that there are days when I don't want to do the right thing concerning my health.
There are days when I don't feel like exercising
There are days when I don't feel like eating nutritiously
There are days when I wish I could just take a skinny pill and forget about my health
So what motivates me to do the right thing when I don't want to? Well, first I think about what I don't want: I remember how unhealthy I felt when I was obese. I was tired all the time, depressed, moody, irritable, and unhappy. It was no way to live.
I also think about my grandmother who died at the age of 47 from a stroke. I don't want that outcome for myself.
Next, I focus on what I do want. I think about how much better I feel now. I handle stress better, maintain balance, make wiser decisions, and have a body I feel good about. Those are results I love having and I don't want to give them up.
Finally, I take action. Even if I don't feel like it in the moment, I put on my exercise shoes or I fix myself a healthy meal. I have learned that feelings change all the time. The worst thing I can do is wait until I feel like it. Instead, I've learned that if I start down the road towards doing the right thing, my feelings will catch up with me.
And you know what? They always do. I've NEVER regretted doing the right thing for myself, although I've had plenty of regrets over doing the wrong thing. How about you?
You see, I am a great believer in this quote by Eleanor Roosevelt: "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do."
Living a healthy lifestyle not only makes you feel better physically but it also builds your character and strengthens your faith. Aren't those results you feel like having?
