Take Back Your Temple / When chocolate is good

,

In the last email, I wrote about my experience in the grocery checkout line and being tempted to buy a packet of Ferraro Rocher chocolate. Remember that my mind whispered to me to buy it. I evaluated its suggestion and decided not to take it.

A reader wrote me back about that. She stated that if the chocolate was something that I really liked, why not have it?

It was a good point. So I wrote her back to clarify. I'm going to tell you what I told her:

I do have a small piece of chocolate when I really want it. But the truth was, I didn't really want it that day. I recognized that it was just an automatic fallback into my old habits and ways of thinking.

I don't forbid myself to have anything. But the majority of my diet is healthy and I save the less healthy stuff for special occasions. Sometimes, chocolate is good!

If I had the chocolate, I would have eaten half of the package to get a good taste of it, eaten it slowly to savor it and enjoy it, and then thrown the rest away. So even that is different from the way I used to do things! Before I would have felt like I had to finish it all.

And that's the difference.

By viewing your thoughts as suggestions and not commands, then you have the freedom to question those suggestions and make a decision based on what is best for you and your ultimate wellbeing.

But what if you are having a hard time with this? You want to lose weight, but you are in a position like I was. If the chocolate calls, you don't have the freedom to say "no." You have to have it.

And it's not occasional thing. And it's not a little chocolate.

By the way, feel free to substitute cookies, chips, cake, pie, or any other of food addiction into this scenario.

The bottom line is that you don't feel like in control of the craving. It controls you. But as your coach, I can help. Food doesn't have to be a struggle. I can show you how to take control back. You'll reach your weight loss goals while still allowing room for your favorite foods on occasion, even chocolate!

You can do this. I know you can.

One of my clients said the following about her coaching experience: "I've changed my way of eating. Not a diet, not a temporary thing, not to lose weight for the class reunion or vacation thing, and no, not surgical procedures of any kind, but a lifetime change for me; a change, according to the will of God for a purpose to Him."
