When you Feel Emotionally Lousy...

Published: Mon, 04/24/17

Let's face it - some days feel better emotionally than others.

Some days, you get an emotional gut punch.

I hate days like that. But they are part of life.

Even though emotionally lousy days don't feel good, they do give you lessons on walking by faith, not by sight. I must admit that these lessons just aren't as clear when everything is rosy!

Here are 5 things I've learned about getting through emotionally lousy days (or moments).

I hope they help you too if you are having an emotionally lousy day.

1. Acknowledge that you are feeling emotionally lousy.

It's okay to acknowledge that you feel bad emotionally and you don't like the feeling. Sometimes you feel better just admitting that truth to yourself rather than ignoring it or trying to bury the feeling under food.

2. Praise God that you are not alone.

The Lord has promised to never leave you nor forsake you. So He is with you, even when you feel emotionally lousy.

3. Confess that whatever situation that made you feel emotionally lousy is working for your ultimate good.

"Confess" means "to say the same." So you agree with what God says. Romans 8:28 tells us the truth:

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."

  • Do you love God?
  • Are you called according to His purpose?

Then you know that all things work together for your good - even situations that may make you feel emotionally lousy.

You may find it hard to believe because you can't see how. Well, just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't true.

All it means is that you can't see it! But don't you agree that God's vision is far greater than yours?

4. Learn any preventative lessons.

Was there anything you could have done to prevent the situation? If so, how can you apply this knowledge?

Since you don't like this feeling, that is a good motivation to do what you can to avoid landing in this spot again.

Apply what you've learned immediately.

5. Continue your self care.

When you feel emotionally lousy, you may be tempted to abandon your self care and stop exercising or eating right.

Don't do it!

You need your physical resources strong for times like these.

So separate the emotionally lousy feeling from your practice of good health habits.

Rain or shine, emotionally lousy feelings or not, your responsibility to take care of the Lord's temple remains.

He deserves your best, no matter how you feel, right? Plus, you'll feel better that you remained on track after the emotionally lousy feeling passes - which it will.

It always does. As the old saying goes, "Tough times come to pass, not to last."

So take comfort in that and find peace in the Lord's presence today!
