Comparing yourself to Others (Bible Warning)

Published: Sat, 11/26/16

Most mornings, I workout with exercise videos and learned an important lesson recently. I use a spare bedroom as space for my workouts. And in this bedroom, I had a full-length mirror. But there was a problem with that mirror.

Sometimes, I would get so caught up looking at myself in the mirror that I would miss the instructor's cues on the video. I'd get out step, then have to take a moment to see where she was so that I get back in step.

Two days ago, I decided to take that mirror off the wall. I then turned it around so that I couldn't look at it. The mirror had become too much of a distraction.

I wanted to put my full focus on the video instructor, paying attention to her cues and example so that I could reap the full benefits of my workout time.

Then I considered how this lesson applies to our Christian walk. Sometimes we are so busy looking at our own shortcomings or how we compare to other people that we stop looking at Jesus!

Even the apostle Peter did that in John 21:18-22. The Lord gave Peter a word, then Peter asked "But Lord, what about this man?" in reference to John.

Jesus said to him, "If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me."

Jesus is our strength and standard. When we feel weak, we need to fix our eyes on Him. When we feel inadequate or puffed up with pride, we need to put our eyes back on Him too.

We don't want to miss any cues He gives us. We want to stay in step with Him at all times.

Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith. Only with His help can we walk worthy of our high calling in Him.

So each day, strive to heed Jesus's three power-packed words:

"You follow me."
