One of my biggest fears as a 17 year-old was not knowing what I was supposed to do in life. I feared drifting and reaching the end of my life thinking, "Is this all there is?"
But now I know that God created me for a
purpose. I have an eternal purpose and an Earthly purpose. So do you! Your eternal purpose comes down to 2 things:
1. Know God through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
2. Glorify God through the Spiritual fruit you bear and through good works.
If you have already accepted Jesus as your Savior, congratulations! You have already done the most important thing in life. Now your job is to give God full access to your heart and mind every day so that He can transform you into the image of His Son.
Through that change process, your relationship with God becomes rich and exciting!
Next, your purpose is to glorify God. Glorify means that you display God's character to others, bringing praise and honor to Him. You bear Spiritual fruit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self control) so that others can taste and see that the Lord is good!
In John 15:8, Jesus says "By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples."
The other way that you glorify God is through good works:
- Ephesians 2:10: "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."
- Matthew 5:16: "Let your light so shine before
men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."
Your life is meant to make a positive difference in someone else's life. God has placed gifts inside of you that are meant to be given to others.
So you see, your purpose in life is NOT:
- What you want to look like
- How much money you
want to make
- What material possessions you want to own
- What events you would like to attend
Your purpose starts with you, but it doesn't end with you! In fulfilling your purpose, you make a positive
impact that lives on long after you are gone.
Here are three questions to ask yourself to help you discover your Earthly purpose:
- What are the things you believe in
most?
- What do you want to give back to the world?
- What do you want to be known for?
To fulfill your purpose, you must use your time in ways consistent with your answers.
If you want to be fulfilled in life, your daily choices must be consistent with the things you believe in most. Otherwise, you will have a divine dissatisfaction; you'll feel like a fraud or a hypocrite.
