The Way to Lay Aside every Weight

Published: Fri, 06/13/14

Are you sick and tired of feeling like something is holding you back?

I've been there.

It is depressing feeling like bad habits are controlling you. I once bought a box of Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies. I was still at 240 pounds, but had made up my mind to change. I had the cookies in the freezer and thought that I could control my portions of them. I said I was just going get 2 cookies, which I did. But it was like the cookies were calling me: "Kim, eat me, eat me!" Thinking obedience would mute the call, I got 2 more cookies.

I ate those, but the cookies continued calling. I got 2 more and ate them. Finally, after hearing the call to eat them again, I got so mad that I took the box out of the freezer, threw the box on the kitchen floor and jumped up and down on it! When I was exhausted, I took the box to the bathroom, dumped the crumbs into the toilet, and flushed them. The calls stopped!

Why did I never hear that call again? Because I changed my "phone number!" I stopped bringing them home. The old Kim doesn't live here anymore.

You see, I had to choose: Either keep the bad habits that were destroying me or lay them aside so that I could arise to the level God was calling me.

I chose to answer that call. How about you?

Hebrew 12:1 exhorts us, "Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

Many saints have gone before us. They have finished their races and have received their heavenly rewards. Now, it is our turn.

Our life's race is not a sprint, but a marathon. To finish a marathon, you cannot be a person who starts a race well, but decides that if you get tired, discouraged, or the race gets too hard, then you can always quit.

No. The person determined to win has made up her mind that quitting is not an option. She may have to slow down, receive refreshments at the water station, run under some water sprinklers when she overheats, or change her running style a bit if a muscle starts to cramp. But she going to finish, come hell or high water. No turning back.

One thing that person does not do is pick up weights during the race that would impact her ability to finish!

If the thought of laying  aside a destructive habit, such as compulsive eating, is scaring you then ask yourself: Where is this fear coming from?

One thing is for sure: It is not coming from God!

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7)."

The only reason a person doesn't lay aside a destructive habit is because deep down, they believe that they need it.

It hurts to think that, doesn't it? I know it hurt me for years to think that I couldn't live without sweets. But sweets weren't bringing life to me; in fact, they were killing me. Slowly. Because of my false belief that I couldn't live without certain foods, I gained over 100 pounds after high school!

Because the weight gain occurred over a 20-year period it was easy to ignore, except during those halfhearted, short-lived attempts at some quick weight loss diet. That's the sprinter's mentality.

To win the race though, I needed a marathon mentality. That is why I wrote the 'Take Back Your Temple' eBook. I believe that learning physical disciplines can increase Spiritual discipline.
