If you are an emotionally insecure person, you are living on shaky ground. The dictionary defines insecurity as unstable, rickety, rocky, wobbly, and unsteady. As a formerly insecure person, I know that is an uncomfortable place to live!
In the natural, just imagine how you'd feel if you were worried constantly that an earthquake was about to hit? Wouldn't you be preoccupied with having a safe place to run to?
For my emotional insecurity, food was the place to which I ran. I used
to be a shy child. Because I was quiet, the message I heard from my peers was that something was wrong with me. I internalized those messages and started believing them. That is where the problems started.
You see, it does not matter what others say about you; what matters is what you choose to believe about yourself! Pretend that every
thought you're currently thinking will be shown on a flashing billboard for the next hour. How many times would a negative thought about yourself flash across?
For every thought feeling good about who God made you to be, you'll probably have dozens more pointing out the mistakes you made, your weaknesses and imperfections, or how you
compare negatively to someone else.
In my case, my external obesity was just an outward manifestation of the insecurity in my heart. Because part of me wanted to hide emotionally, that desire manifested itself physically. My excess fat was emotional insulation. It was an attempt to protect myself from hurt.
So what was my cure? If you've been reading my messages for a while, you know my answer: the Word of God! Whether the insecurity is coming from internal forces or external ones, the only thing that will help you stand strong is to stand on the Rock of God's word.
You are probably familiar with the parable Jesus told in Matthew 7:24-26. Jesus told about the house built on rock versus the house built on sand. In the parable, both people heard His word, but only one took action on it. Guess who was the stable one? You got it. The one who took action!
Instead of believing those negative messages of my past, I had to take action. I decided to memorize scriptures about what God says about me. I applied myself to believing them. Every time a negative thought about myself came up, I reminded myself of the truth.
That is going to
be your cure for insecure as well. Here are some scriptures to believe. Search God's word yourself to find even more:
· Genesis 1:27
So God created man in His own image; in
the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
· Psalm 139:14
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And
that my soul knows very well.
· Ezekiel 16:8
"When I passed by you again and looked upon you, indeed your time was the time of love; so I spread My wing over you and
covered your nakedness. Yes, I swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine," says the Lord GOD.
· Zephaniah 3:17
The LORD your God in your
midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing."
· 1 John 3:1
Behold what
manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
Read these scriptures out loud. Then, close your eyes and just imagine how your life would change if your
security was based upon God's word. I know your life would never be the same!
