"A Scale Cannot Measure your Worth"

Published: Thu, 05/15/14

One of my pet peeves when it comes to weight loss is the practice of "scale worship." If you have ever been on a diet, tell me if this sounds familiar:

  • If the scale is down a few pounds, you get permission to feel good about yourself. You want to celebrate and usually, that means eating more or eating some extra "treats."
  • If the scale is up or staying the same, you get depressed. To make yourself feel better, you eat more or eat some extra "treats."

Do you see how this puts you in a no-win situation? In my case, I started allowing the scale to measure my worth!

That's why I call it "scale worship." The only true measure of your worth is how God measures it. He thought you were worth enough so that He sent His Son Jesus to die for your sins. Your job is to agree with Him!

Once I started agreeing with God's measure of my worth, I never again allowed the scale to be the sole measure of my health progress. I looked to other measures. Do I feel stronger, more energetic? Am I the size I want to be and do my clothes fit properly? Do I sleep well? Am I mentally sharp?

I am now concerned more about my health and the quality of my daily life rather than the scale.

Other ways I measure my health progress are:

  • Enhanced shape and muscle tone
  • Increased muscle strength
  • Better mood control
  • Added glow to skin
  • Enhanced balance and coordination
  • Improved endurance
  • Increased ability to handle stress
  • Improved circulation
  • Increased optimism about life
  • Amplified ability to tackle other life goals

These are benefits worth striving for, don't you agree? 3 John 1:2 says, "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers."

For change to last, your identity must be grounded in the knowledge that you are "Beloved." Once you know that you are God's Beloved, you no longer let a scale define your worth.
