The Hidden Secret of Daily Success

Published: Wed, 06/04/14

"Discipline is training yourself to do what you ought to do, whether you feel like it or not." Wow! I read that definition earlier in the week and I have been using it on myself after I decided I wanted to get an earlier start to my day. I wanted to start my Bible reading at 5:00 a.m. and then exercise after that.

But the first morning after my decision, the resistance started. I was sleeping good! Then I remembered the definition: "Okay Kim, this is a training moment. We are going to treat this like ripping off a band-aid. It's better to do it fast so on the count of 3, we are going to get up. 1-2-3-PULL!!!"

And I got on up. I groaned a little, but I was on my feet. And that is all that mattered.

Now after I got my Bible study done, I felt great because I did what I promised myself. And here is your hidden secret of success, which is also in the Bible:

"All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness (Hebrews 12:11 NASB)."

This is the mistake many people make that leads to failure: They choose to do something other than what they ought to do. Now, it feels joyful in the moment to do that, but afterwards comes regret (sorrow from your spirit).

But success comes when you choose to do what you ought to do with every choice. It hurts at the moment (sorrow from your flesh), but afterwards comes joy from having done the right thing! Do you see the difference?

  • Choose wrong: Joy now, sorrow later
  • Choose right: Sorrow now, joy later

The joy from choosing right lasts longer because it endures! But the sorrow from choosing wrong also endures. What do you want to live with?

I challenge you to put that principle to the test today. Think of three things that you know you ought to do. If it is a big thing, then break it down into smaller steps and take the first step.

Okay, I already warned you that it may hurt to do the right thing in the moment because your flesh will complain. But after you've done it, how do you feel?

Don't you feel a sense of relief, accomplishment? Didn't your self-respect increase? That's the joy I'm talking about!

It seems like a little thing, but I've got another secret for you. There are really no such things as little things! That's how the devil gets you, "One little bite won't hurt."

It all counts because every small choice adds up to big results over time. You can either make those big results good ones or bad ones.

I'd love to hear how your test went. What three things did you choose to do? What joy did you experience afterwards?
