This morning, I was reading John 10:31-33 in which the Pharisees were going to stone Jesus because He declared that He is the Son of God. Jesus' response in John 10:34-35 blew me away:
"Jesus answered them, "Is it not
written in your law, 'I said, "You are gods"'? If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?
What did Jesus mean by 'gods' (lowercase 'g')? I sought Psalm 82:6,
where the quote came from: "'I said, "You are gods, And all of you are children of the Most High.'" In this context, the word 'gods' comes from the Hebrew word 'elohim,' which means "judges" or "mighty ones."
If you are in Jesus, the Word of God has come to you. So that means you are meant to use God's word in every choice to judge situations right. You are meant to choose good over evil, life over death, blessing over cursing (see Deuteronomy 30:15-20).
When you do this, you follow Christ, who is the Word of God. He is the
uppercase 'G,' God and there is none above or before Him. You are strong in the Lord and in the power of His might! He is above you and goes before you.
Romans 5:17 says, "For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the
One, Jesus Christ." We are meant to reign in life!
But Psalm 82:5 describes a people who didn't walk in their true identity. They didn't judge right, they walked about in darkness, and their foundations were unstable. This can also describe a person who is a slave to sin. They behave as if the Word of God has not come to
them!
That is not Christ's will for you. His will is that you not only be a hearer of His Word, but a doer of it. In this way, you take authority over every situation, over your daily choices.
This is how it works:
- Your choices drive your behaviors
- Your behaviors, when repeated, become your habits
- Your habits multiply over time
- Time reveals the results of your habits
Now, some choices can be painful in the moment. I don't like denying my flesh at all, especially when it comes to certain foods I know are not good for me! But this scripture makes a promise: "All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have
been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness (Hebrews 12:11 NASB)."
I have learned that when you value the reward, you will do the work! Because I value the peaceable fruit of righteousness, I train myself through discipline to make right choices in health and other areas. And I have greater self respect
because of it.
So see each of your choices in a new light today. Each one is an opportunity to see God's will done in that moment, to bring God's kingdom alive as you apply His Word consistently.
This behavior will soon became a habit and multiply over time. The final result is that you will reign over every circumstance as you abide in Christ Jesus!
