The Power that Works within YOU (Power Thoughts)

Published: Mon, 11/04/13

It's 4:15 am in the morning and I'm battling cold symptoms. Sometimes God gives me the best messages when I can't go back to sleep and this one is a goodie! I'm meditating on Ephesians 3:20-21:

"Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen."

The phrase "the power that works" stands out to me because the scripture is talking about the power that every believer in Jesus Christ has - the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of you. Here are some things that power can do:

  • Create: "The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light (Genesis 1:2)."

  • Resurrect: "But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you (Romans 8:11)."

  • Heal: "Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them (Luke 5:17)."

Now you might ask - if I have the power of God living on the inside of me, then how come I'm living a defeated life?  I think the reason for most believers is that they simply don't know that they have the Holy Spirit inside as a Help to them and don't know what He can do!

The second reason is that you could be interfering with the Holy Spirit's work within you. Because the Holy Spirit is the power of God and God can't contradict His own Word, then the power is quenched when:

  • You speak words that are contrary to God's word
  • You act in ways that are contrary to God's word
  • You don't act when and how the Holy Spirit tells you to act

God words says: "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers (3 John 1:2)."

I believe that God has given each one of us a personal vision of prospering in all things, including health. And I believe the Holy Spirit's still small voice speaks to us several times a day to direct our path toward that vision so that it can became a reality in our lives and glorify God.

But what often happens? We ignore that voice. We think the way we've always thought and do what we've always done. And so our lives never change.

Usually the reason we ignore the Holy Spirit's voice is because of fear. We fear rejection from others; we fear being uncomfortable (although the Holy Spirit IS the Comforter so He can bring comfort if we ask); we fear success, failure, or both.

But know that that fear is not coming from God: "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7)."

Because the enemy wants to derail God's good plans for you (just like he did to Adam and Eve all the way back to the Garden of Eden), he inspires fear with deception. He subtly suggests that if you do what the Holy Spirit is leading you to do, you will be hurt. The unspoken implication is that God wants to hurt you. The enemy wants to deny God of the glory that God will get as His good plans come to pass in your life.

But God loves you more than you will ever know! So get out of the way and allow the Holy Spirit to work within you. Here is how:

  • Began to study and meditate on God's word regularly as if your life depends on it. Because it does! When Jesus asked Simon Peter if he wanted to go back, Peter answered wisely: "'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life (John 6:68).'" Neglect some TV or computer time if you must, but don't neglect the Word. It will be a profitable endeavor for you.

  • Every day, you have many choices to make. Listen for that still, small voice inside that directs you. To be sure it is God speaking, then it must agree with the Word, benefit you or someone else ultimately, and bring peace once you obey it.

  • If you feel afraid to do what you know is right, then ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with God's love. God's love casts out fear. If you feel uncomfortable, then ask the Holy Spirit to comfort you during the process. Whatever you need, He's got it. Receive it by faith.

I hope after today, you will decide each day to allow the power within you to actually WORK. To send this message to you, I had to overcome my fear of writing to you too much!

It has taken me over one hour to write this, but you know what? I feel better already!

Be blessed in Health, Healing, and Wholeness,
