God is a FORTRESS (Free Devotional Day 12 of 15)

Published: Mon, 10/14/13

When I think of fortress,  I see a stone Medieval castle surrounded by a huge wall under attack from an outside enemy. Although the enemy may come against the fortress with flaming arrows and battering rams, the people inside are protected against the attack.

Today's word to describe God is "Fortress."

Devotion

The first thing I did after moving into our house was to put up a banner near the front door with Hebrews 3:4 on it:

"For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God."

I thought it was important to dedicate the house to God through prayer because it was only through His grace that buying the house was possible. In addition, every door and window was anointed.

In the many years of living in the neighborhood, God has protected us from some  negative events:

  • The neighbor across the street had his house robbed before he even moved in. Someone stole his furnace and all of his light fixtures. Then a few years after he moved in, someone broke into his house again.

  • The neighbor on the right has had three break-ins.

  • The neighbor across the street diagonally has an attempted break-in.

  • Teens on a joyride jumped the curb of our neighbor on the left, knocking over her mailbox and destroying the tree on her sidewalk.

But nothing has happened to our house. God has kept us safe. Psalm 91:7 comes to mind:

"A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you."

Every morning when Mike and I pray, we include the same things that Jesus modeled in the Lord's prayer. A key component of that prayer is to deliver us from evil. Now we don't mind trials if they are going to give God glory. But, if an attack is just the enemy's desire to amuse himself by causing us grief?

No thank you. We'll pass. So we pray for God's protection every day and strive to live in the center of God's will. I pray you do the same. There is no safer place to be!

Meditation Scripture

·         Psalm 18:2 The LORD is my rock  and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
