RESPECT your Small Beginnings

Published: Fri, 10/25/13

I had a young mother write me through Facebook a couple of days ago about her attempts to lose weight. She listed many health issues as her barriers to weight loss and asked the question, "Do you think God can help me?"

I answered, "Yes. It will require faith and patience on your part, but God is greater than any of the challenges you've had to deal with. Wouldn't you agree? What does your life look like once you have lost weight and gotten healthy again?"

She wrote back a short, but powerful vision of being able to play hide and seek with her daughters, walking regularly, and eventually being able to run for causes, like curing cancer and diabetes.

After commending her for her goals, I asked if she could start with walking 5-10 minutes a day. Her response made me smile: "Yes, I can do 5 or 10 minutes today. But isn't that too small of an amount?"

Ha, ha - If you've been connected with Take Back Your Temple for any length of time, then you know that I am a big believer in small steps! I love the quote by Teddy Roosevelt, "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."

Here is my complete response to her. I pray it blesses you today:

"That's a good question. But please answer this first: Did you do what I recommended?

The bible cautions us not to despise small beginnings (see Zechariah 4:10). If you aren't doing anything to reach your goal of being able to play hide and seek with your daughters, then starting with 5-10 minutes of walking a day is at least a start. Better than sitting around wishing and hoping for a change, wouldn't you agree? You will feel better in doing SOMETHING to reach your goal. Those few minutes will brighten your attitude, help you feel better, and most importantly, renew your hope that things can change.

Some days, you may feel like walking more and when you do, do it! But at least make 5-10 minutes your minimum. You can even have your daughters walk with you. It will set a great example for them and allow you to bond with them more closely.

As you get stronger, you can add 5 minutes each week. Over time, you will walk more and eventually you can do walk/runs, then run! But it all starts with small beginnings."

What great thing is God calling you to do? Are you not doing anything because you can't start at the top or because your effort doesn't compare with someone else's?

Time to ditch that attitude. Work with what you have in your hands right now. If you are faithful in little, then God will reward you with the ability to do more and have more.

Be blessed in Health, Healing, and Wholeness,
