God is a COMFORTER (Free Devotional Day 2 of 15)

Published: Fri, 10/04/13

Many of you connected with Take Back Your Temple due to emotional eating issues. So coming to know God as a Comforter is of particular relevance to help when emotions overwhelm you.

I mentioned yesterday that I did a personal bible exploration on how God described Himself and how others described Him. I came up with 77 words/phrases. After sending the message to you yesterday, I felt led to create a mini-devotional around the first few words I discovered. So over the next two weeks, I'll share one new word with you every day. I hope these messages encourage you!

Please take a few moments just to meditate on the word of the day and how God has shown Himself real to you in that area. One of the ways we overcome is through the word of our testimony (Revelation 12:11). So it is important to recall where God brought you from in order to have confidence in where He is taking you.

Today's word to describe God is "Comforter."

Devotion

Isn't it good to know that we serve a God who knows what it feels like to experience human emotion? Jesus laid aside His deity to be born of a woman. He walked this Earth as a man, experiencing the gamut of emotions like from joy to grief. So as our high priest, He has the ability to empathize with our pains and sorrows. Isaiah 53:3 describes Him as "A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief."

There was a time in my life when I didn't trust God. My Father had abandoned me and my mother when I was an infant, so I had no clue as to what having a father was like. So when I was overwhelmed with depression, which was the main emotion I struggled with in the past, going to God was the last thing I wanted to do.

But at a Christian women's conference 12 years ago, God reveal His love to me personally. Spiritually, I felt His comforting arms around me and I was able to properly grieve my father's loss.

Over the years, I have learned some ways in which God has supplied comfort to us:

o        We are comforted in knowing that God loves us so much that He sent His only Son to die for our sins.

o        We are comforted in knowing that God has promised to never leave us nor forsake us.

o        We are comforted in knowing that God has given us everything we need pertaining to life and godliness.

o        We are comforted in knowing that God works all things together for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

In His final discourse to the disciples, Jesus promised them that after His return to the Father, He would send the Holy Spirit to them to teach them and bring all things to their remembrance. The Holy Spirit reminds us of God's word, which is the ultimate gauge of what is true.

If we need comfort due to the loss of a loved one, it's normal to weep because you'll miss that person. You might even wonder how you'll get along without them. And yet, you will with time because God will give you the strength and grace to do it.

God redeems your past, guides your present, and secures your future. You are covered on every side and that is a fact in which to take comfort.
