My husband Mike tells a great story that illustrates what God's deliverance is like in his Right Now Prayers
book. One summer, Mike coached a little league football team and while he was waiting for his team to take the field, our 5 year-old nephew was wrestling with some older boys nearby.
The other boys apparently got the best of our nephew during play and he couldn't get free of them. Finally in desperation he yelled, "Uncle Mike, save me!" One minute, our nephew was being held down and the next, he was free. Mike said that it was comical to see how quickly the other boys let him go.
This story is a good reminder that all we have to do is call on the name of "Jesus!" when we are in trouble. At that name, the enemy has to flee!
Today's word to describe God is "Deliverer."
Devotion
I got to know God as a Deliverer during a terrifying road trip back in the late 90s. I was a trainer for a medical software company and I had a class to conduct in State College, PA. However instead flying into State College, I decided to fly into Pittsburgh to save the company money. It just going to be a 2-hour drive by rental car and it was during the daytime. Or so I thought.
Unfortunately, my flight was delayed due to bad weather. By the time I landed in Pittsburgh, it was dark and snowing. Now I am a Georgia girl and it rarely snows here. And even when it does, it is usually one or two inches at the most. So I am not accustomed to driving in snow and especially at night!
The snow was fairly light at first. I could still see as I drove. But it soon started snowing heavily. Eventually, the road narrowed to two lanes and the elevation increased sharply. I was now on a mountain road. By this time, snow was blowing everywhere and wind shears shook the car. I could barely see anything as I inched the car along. I was terrified that I would spin off the road and end up stranded in a ditch or worse.
All I could do was pray that God would deliver me to my destination safely. Eventually, I got over the mountain and the road widened again. When I saw the sign for my hotel I rejoiced. I could barely walk when I got out of the car because I was shaking so bad. Upon entering my room, I sank to my knees and praised God for protecting me.
The next day, I discovered the full extent of God's deliverance. When I told my physician contact what had happened, he told me that the previous Winter, several people had died driving off of that hazardous mountain pass. It was a miracle that I didn't do the same, especially being unfamiliar with the roads.
So you can't tell me that God isn't a Deliverer! I don't know that fact by theory or hearsay, but I know it by personal experience. How has God shown Himself as a Deliverer to you? Praise Him!
