Have you ever been wounded from the enemy's attacks? Even if the attack came from another person, the enemy was behind it; the bible says that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, and spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places (see Ephesians 6:12).
According to that scripture, the enemy operates according to a highly organized structure. He's the head, but he has managers and underlings with one mission: to steal, kill, and destroy.
And yet those of us in Jesus Christ have no need to fear. Our Lord is the One who overcame the world! With His name, we have authority over all power of the enemy. Today's word to describe God is
"Defense."
Devotion
I had never been so angry. Many years ago, I was leading a meeting and a manager with a known "Napolean" complex challenged my authority. I had asked for a status update from his team and his response was quite disrespectful. This manager had demonstrated a negative attitude in previous meetings, but I had ignored it. However this time, I couldn't ignore it any longer; I rebuked him in front of everyone.
After the meeting, I was shaking because even though this man worked in a different division and didn't have any authority over me, I thought that my rebuking him publically would have negative consequences. So I prayed. I knew I had spoken the truth, but I prayed that God would redeem the situation.
Later that day, my prayer was answered. This man worked in another building, but he made a trip back over to where I worked, found me and apologized! I was shocked because this man practically made a sport of belittling others and he never apologized for anything. I know God convicted him in his heart about what he had done.
That day, I learned that my identity in Christ is the most powerful defense against the enemy's plans. The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in me. Colossians 1:27 says: "To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory."
Read that part again out loud: "Christ in you, the hope of glory." Because Jesus overcame the world, there is no problem too big for you to overcome. Demons had to flee at His Word. You have heaven backing you up when you exercise the name and authority that Jesus has given you as a believer in Him!
So the next time you are confused, doubting, or are afraid, be still and know that He is God. The bible promises in Proverbs 18:10, "The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe." When you need a defense, let Jesus be the first place to which you run.
